DeWitt C. Wilkerson, DMD

Dr. DeWitt Wilkerson is the Immediate Past-President of the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health(AAOSH), has studied extensively for years with the top Physicians, Nutritionists, and Health Coaches, specifically to develop an effective implementation model for complete health in Dentistry.

Recent research is showing a strong relationship between dental occlusion and breathing. The dental arch impacts breathing & breathing impacts the dental arch.

The implications of this relationship are HUGE!

For example, a one year old child is given cow’s milk but is unknowingly allergic to it. Nasal congestion develops and the child begins mouth breathing. Over time, the “dirty air”, unfiltered by the nose, causes inflammation in the tonsils. While mouth breathing, the tongue remains positioned low in the mouth causing the maxillary arch to be narrow. The lower arch is also narrow and the teeth are crowded. By age three, the child is bruxing and snoring due to Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome(UARS) and restricted tonsilar airway. By age five, the child is still bedwetting, struggling cognitively, behaviorally, and teachers are concerned about the possibility of ADHD. The child may develop Obstructive Sleep Apnea(OSA). All this because of an allergy, mouth breathing and severely disrupted sleep!

Occlusally, patients with dental crowding, crossbites, anterior open bites, deep overbites, tongue-tie and gummy smiles are often demonstrating signs of airway and breathing disorders. Just as form follows function, so deformation of occlusion follows dysfunction of breathing, swallowing, and tongue position. These problems can be observed in all age groups.

Young Adults present to our practices reporting sore muscles and joints, fatigue, headaches, clenching and grinding. It turns out many of these young women are mouth breathers and suffer from Respiratory Effort Related Arousals(RERA) during sleep, which can result in many of their “TMD” symptoms.

Older “Mature” Men can’t be left out of this discussion! These patients present to our offices with signs of severe bruxism, loud snoring, daytime fatigue and brain fog. OSA can be a major hidden driving force.

Dentistry’s Great Awakening is a presentation designed to enlighten dental teams to see their opportunity to understand these important medical-dental relationships. Built on the premise that deformation follows dysfunction, we will also discuss diagnostic testing and treatment modalities.

America is facing a health care crisis that will soon bankrupt both our economy and our quality of life through chronic, lifestyle induced, medical conditions. The buzzword in medicine today is inflammation. It has been linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, sleep apnea, gastric reflux, autoimmune disorders, and Alzheimers. Periodontal conditions can reflect both local and systemic inflammation.

Whole body inflammation is most often present when generalized periodontal inflammation is observed. The mouth is a window to many underlying medical conditions of the whole person.

How will we address this critical national epidemic of lifestyle induced inflammation?

Who will champion the cause and reverse this downward health spiral?

Who is on the front lines every day, observing the signs of systemic inflammation?

I propose that the Dental Team is positioned to be Medicine’s emerging superstar!

The growing crisis will result in the rationing of health care in the U.S.

The solution is a medical revolution, where each individual becomes rational, taking personal responsibility for their lifestyle and health. It’s the only solution, and the most obvious champion for this revolution is the Dental Team.

How do we learn the information needed to lead this medical revolution?

How do we effectively screen, test, and coach our patients?

How do we motivate our patients to take this seriously and become excited to become fitter, sharper, sexier, more energetic, and live longer?

We will share in detail, a model for you to begin using immediately in your practice. Dental teams, you are urged to come join us for a career and life changing session!

Learning Objectives

  • Present a clear model of periodontal conditions and systemic inflammation
  • Handout visual aids for patient discussions
  • Screening & testing tools for periodontal pathogens, sleep apnea, gastric reflux, general health assessment, and nutritional requirements
  • Resources for periodontal care, probiotics, nutritional supplements & counseling, further training in whole health coaching

It Can Make You or Break You!

(Additional Topics: Occlusal Equilibration, Recording Centric Relation)

We live in the most advanced age imaginable for our great profession- digital, metal-free dentistry! We are seeing esthetic results never thought possible in the PFM era. Yet, to whom much is given, much is required… with Zirconia comes great responsibility!

The timeless and critical principles of dental occlusion can only be communicated to a computer by an astute clinician. The joints, muscles, and dental occlusion must work in concert to produce predictably stable outcomes. A timeless Law is that Form(esthetics) and Function(occlusion) always work together in nature and in Dentistry. There is nothing more disheartening than a broken veneer or an uncomfortably restored patient with sore muscles, headaches and a clicking joint. How can that happen? A second timeless Law is that Deformation(breakage, soreness, derangement) follows Dysfunction(Masticatory System disharmony of the joints, muscles and occlusion).

This presentation will address the 4 critical principles of dental occlusion every Dentist must understand:

1. Joint Condition & Position

2. Anterior Guidance

3. Vertical Dimension of Occlusion

4. Parafunction

Dr. Wilkerson will share case studies from his 35 years as an expert in solving occlusal and restorative problems on a daily basis. This presentation will answer your questions and build your confidence!

The Infection-Inflammation/ TMD-Occlusion/ Airway-Sleep Apnea Connection

“Integrative Medicine” is a rapidly growing focus in many prestigious medical centers such as The Cleveland Clinic, Duke Medical, Baylor Medical, Stanford Medical…

The emphasis is on caring for the whole person preventatively, not just treating obvious disease as it occurs. It’s the same focus we’ve had in Dentistry with decay and periodontal disease.

“Integrative Dental Medicine” uses scientific research to discover the golden opportunity we have to expand our influence as true specialists in oral medicine. Did you know there are very common links between bruxism, dental wear & malocclusion, headaches, dysfunctional breathing, sleep apnea, gastric reflux ,“ADHD” and “TMD”, that are rarely recognized in the medical community? Would you accept the challenge to learn more about these relationships and how you can help many of your patients, neighbors and family members?

Dr. Wilkerson will provide a detailed checklist that can be easily incorporated into your practice immediately. He likes to say, “On a great day we save a smile, on an amazing day we save a life.”

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn the exciting advances in dental medicine from a true leader and expert.

The 4 B’s: Bacteria, Bite, Breathing & Body Connection to Total Health through Dentistry

Dr. Steven Masley, former Medical Director of the prestigious Pritikin Longevity Center and a pioneer in anti-aging medicine, states that studies show that Americans on the whole are aging faster than ever with conditions like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease occurring increasingly earlier on in life—along with everyday age indicators like wrinkles and love handles.

Do you have patients suffering from diabetes, excess weight, chronic fatigue, muscle and joint pain, headaches, gastric reflux, heart burn, chronic cough, nasal congestion, TMJ, ADHD, OSA, bruxism, severely worn teeth, poor sleep, hypertension, heart problems, or IBS?

What is Dentistry’s role in modern medicine? We have a key role in identifying and addressing several factors of accelerated aging and chronic health conditions that affect total health.

Dr. Wilkerson does this through focusing on the 4B’s:

  • Bacteria-oral pathogens, salivary testing, oral probiotics, perio protocols
  • Bite-TMJ, dental occlusion, bruxism, tooth erosion, headaches, muscle soreness
  • Breathing- airway/breathing disorders, sleep apnea, myofunctional therapy
  • Body-gastric reflux, nutrition, diabetes, stress, sleep, toxins, smoking
  • Dr. Wilkerson will provide a detailed checklist that can be easily incorporated into your practice immediately. He likes to say, “On a great day we save a smile, on an amazing day we save a life.”

Understanding the Anatomy, Pathology, Diagnosis & Treatment of TMJoint Problems

Very few dental professionals can describe the anatomy, function, dysfunction, pathology, diagnosis or appropriate medical care of the Temporomandibular Joint. We see patients who come in to the office with sore muscles, clenching and grinding, headaches, clicking joints and sore necks and most dentists make them a splint and hope it helps. The whole “TMD” thing is a big mystery to most of us.

Well this is our opportunity to unravel that mystery!

Dr. Wilkerson has been problem solving TMD problems daily since 1982. He has taught worldwide on this important subject. He will bring to us a clear and simple message that we can all understand and utilize immediately in the care of our patients. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to learn from a true expert, on a subject that is very important for every dental practice.

Proper Management of Bruxism, Headaches, TMJ, and Airway

Our patients present with many dental concerns that are traditionally addressed with occlusal splint therapy. There are many different designs of splints used in Dentistry.

Did you know that certain splints can actually cause damage when inappropriately used?

Research shows that a CR Splint can make Sleep Apnea worse 50% of the time.

An Anterior Contact Splint(NTI, B Splint) can increase joint loading and cause pain, if there is a disc displacement. Which splint is best for different problems? When should we use an Anterior Contact Splint(NTI, B splint), CR Splint, Anterior Repositioning Splint, etc.? When not?

This presentation will include a decision tree for guiding the best utilization of splint therapy in Dentistry.

Dr. Wilkerson has worked for 35 years seeing thousands of patients suffering with joint problems, bite problems, bruxism, headaches and sleep apnea. He will share his expertise and the latest research to guide you toward the successful utilization of a valuable tool in every dental practice-occlusal splints.

Dentistry’s Leading Role in Screening, Testing and Treating Sleep Disorders

Dental Sleep Medicine has become a very popular topic in the last several years. There is a very significant medical role for Dentistry in addressing Obstructive Sleep Apnea(OSA), which affects over 30 million people in the U.S. An even higher number suffer from Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome(UARS), which can present itself as morning headaches, clenching and grinding at night, and chronic fatigue, the classic “TMD” signs and symptoms. Every dental team should be very familiar and comfortable addressing this important medical/dental subject.

Dr. Wilkerson will provide a step by step checklist on how to evaluate every dental patient for sleep disordered breathing. He will also discuss the relationships between airway/breathing problems during the day, the significance of nasal vs. mouth breathing, the relationship to dental malocclusions, facial growth & development, childhood symptoms of “ADHD” caused by poor breathing and sleep deprivation, sleep disordered breathing related “TMD”, and early onset dementia due to reduced brain oxygen at night.

Treatment protocols for the dental office will be presented, which not only oral appliance management but orthodontic resolution.

Don’t miss this important opportunity to learn the state of the science for Dentistry leading the way into the future of recognition and intervention of sleep disorders.

There have been a number of Revolutions in the history of Dentistry:

  • 1970’s – The Restorative Revolution (save teeth)
  • 1980’s – The Temporomandibular Revolution (joint health matters to dental health)
  • 1990’s – The Esthetic/Cosmetic Revolution (whiter is better!)
  • 2007 – The Economic Revolution (saving my 401k is better than whiter!)
  • 2017 – The Wellness Revolution (total health emphasis)

There is a revolution occurring in Dentistry that will change the future of diagnosis and treatment planning forever. We now recognize, through research, that there is a relationship between airway and breathing problems, dental malocclusions, anterior open bites, maxillary supraeruption, sleep deprivation often misdiagnosed as “A.D.D.” in children, upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) leading to sleep disturbances, that are often overlapping with “TMD” signs and symptoms in young adults, and chronic obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) that leads to oxygen deprivation leading to early onset dementia in mature adults. Understanding these connections leads to a conclusion that all patients, of all ages, should be screened and treated for proper breathing and sleep.

This is Dentistry’s Great Awakening!

In this presentation Dr. Wilkerson will utilize a checklist for evaluation, diagnosis and treatment that can be used immediately to address these very significant dental-medical concerns.

Don’t miss this opportunity to sit under the guidance of a seasoned and noted expert who will facilitate learning in an easy going, understandable and practical manner.
